Styles and Sparks

Caption Styles, typography, colour and the animated details that make a subtitle look deliberate.

What a Style is

A Style is a saved caption look: its font and face, size, tracking, line spacing, alignment and colour. Pick one and the captions that use it change together. Position and Sparks are set for the run, not saved in the Style.

Captions come in three kinds. Regular is the ordinary spoken caption, the look every other kind of caption can override. Hook is the short opening line Cast writes for a clip, held at the top of the frame. Special is a caption that a Formation gives its Special treatment, overlapping the caption before it one lane up.

The Lite plan includes 12 Styles; Pro and Max include the full library of more than 40.

Which captions a Style reaches

Subs > Style
On the Ignite page, the Style row in Subs gives every ordinary caption one Regular Style and saves that Style as your default. Hook and Special captions keep their own.
Switch Style
Restyles only the blocks you selected. Press S, or open a block's Style entry in the timeline menu, and pick a look. The selected blocks take it and nothing else changes.
The default Style
New captions, and the Regular captions Shuffle makes, start from the Style saved in the Subs row. Captions already on the timeline keep the look they have.

When Shuffle's Switch Wave is on, the Subs > Style row is hidden: Switch chooses the Styles, so one Style for every caption would undo it.

Typography controls

Font
Any installed family, plus the bundled choices. Onest carries the Romanian diacritics.
Weight and style
Every face the family installs, from Thin to Black, with its italic or oblique cuts.
Size
The caption's scale relative to the frame, so the look holds at different resolutions.
Tracking
Letter spacing. 1.0 is the family's own spacing; lower values tighten it and higher values open it.
Line spacing
The visible gap between lines and between stacked blocks, measured in caption size units.
Align
Left, Center or Right. The caption text sits on that edge of its block.
Position
The anchor the caption stack grows from. Captions stack downward from the anchor.
Set for the run
Color and Accent
The main text colour and the accent used by highlighted words and accent-colored parts.
Highlight, Detonate and Special
In Advanced, style highlighted words, Detonate captions and every Special caption independently of Primary. Each follows Primary until you change a value.
Ignite Override
Sits on the selected caption in the Inspector, in an Ember project. On: the style rows change that caption's Style alone. Off: they change every caption of the same kind.

While the Ignite page is open, a Style change reaches the placed captions at once: the ones at the playhead first, then the rest of the run. A change to placed polish places that polish again and replaces the previous set. After Done, nothing follows until Ignite runs again.

Sparks

Sparks are the small details around the words. Each is a switch with its own settings, set for the run and not saved in the Style. Each can be reset to the way it ships without touching the rest of the look.

Shadow
A soft shadow behind the captions that separates text from a busy frame.
Edge
Softens and fades the tail of each caption. It is skipped when the next caption starts almost immediately.
Depth
Blurs, dims and shrinks the caption a new stacked block lands over, with a small zoom.
Links
Pairs neighboring captions so one fades in as the other fades out, with a shared scale and easing.
Glow
A glow behind the captions for a brighter, more graphic look.
Shake
A small, repeatable shake on the captions. Useful for impact, distracting everywhere else.
Slow Shutter
Repeats frames for a long-exposure feel on movement.
Stretch
Scales the text non-uniformly, wider or taller, without changing the typeface.
Word SFX
Plays a bundled sound on each word of the share of matching captions you choose.

Shadow, Edge, Depth, Links, Glow, Shake and Slow Shutter are on every plan. Stretch and Word SFX are part of Pro and Max.

Saving a look as a Style

Save as Style
In Settings, under Editing, the Ignite card's Styles row has a plus button. With Resolve connected, build a caption on Resolve's Fusion page as one group, publish the controls you want on the Edit page, then press plus. Name the Style, choose Regular or Special, and it joins the Style pickers.
The Styles folder
The folder button beside the plus opens where your saved Styles live. Each one is the comp's settings and its still, when Resolve supplied one.
Project Memory
The Style you use and the workflow choices you make stay with the project, so reopening it restores what you chose.

To change an edit that is already ignited, adjust the look live instead of running Ignite again.
