Install Ember, connect it to DaVinci Resolve, and take a cut from raw dialogue to finished captions in one pass.

What Ember does

Ember is a subtitle and finishing accelerator for DaVinci Resolve. It listens to your cut, returns word-timed captions, gives you a dedicated place to fix them, and then places the approved look and polish back on the Resolve timeline. You can also edit a project's media and captions entirely inside Ember when Resolve is not part of the job.

The app opens on the Main page, Ember's home page: the pipeline, Ignite and Export, with the timeline beside them.

Generate
Ember transcribes the dialogue, breaks it into readable subtitle blocks, and keeps a time for every word.
Ember's subtitle editor
Verify
You check wording and timing against the waveform, fix words in place, and shape the blocks.
The same subtitle editor
Ignite
One pass places the caption Style and the polish you chose: zooms, B-roll, transitions, music, sounds, Flares and looks.

Export
Ember batch-renders the clips in your timeline, or posts them to connected social accounts where a platform is available.
A folder, or a social account where one is available.

Before you start

  • Windows 10+ or macOS 12+. The desktop app is the product; there is no browser workflow to install.
  • For the Resolve workflow, DaVinci Resolve installed, with a project open and the timeline you want to caption. Resolve Studio is not required.
  • Ember projects and their local render need Pro or Max.
  • A signed-in Ember account. Your plan determines which pipelines, polish features, Styles and export paths are available.
  • Ember installed on this computer. Use Download in the site header, or the Download button on the home page, and sign in. Updates arrive inside the app.

Styles download with your plan. Ember installs the Styles your plan includes automatically. A plan change adds the new Styles without reinstalling the app.

Your first pass

  1. Open the cut and mark the range

Load the project and timeline you want to caption. To caption part of it only, set In and Out on the Resolve timeline with Resolve's own I and O; Ember reads the connected timeline's marks. In an Ember project, press I and O on Ember's own timeline, and press Alt+X to clear both. Ember reads the active timeline, not a file sitting on disk.

  2. Choose a pipeline

On the Generate page, in the Audio card, the Pipeline control offers Extraction, Translation and Scripts. Extraction turns the spoken audio into subtitles. Translation does the same and then retimes the result in another language. Scripts maps an approved script onto the performance, and its option appears only while Furnace is on. Start with Extraction.

  3. Press Start

Start sits at the bottom of the Generate page sidebar. It runs Generate, then Shuffle when Shuffle is on, then Ignite, in one pass, and shows progress while it works.

  4. Review and adjust

The pass finishes on the Ignite page, which opens when the pass reaches Ignite: Done keeps the placed clips, and Back deletes what Ignite appended. Play the cut and check where the captions and the polish land. Wording and timing are fixed in the subtitle editor on the Edit page, not on the Ignite page.

  5. Adjust the look and the polish

On the Ignite page, pick a Style and turn on the polish you want: zooms, B-roll, transitions, music, sounds, Flares and looks. While the Ignite page is open, a Style change reaches the placed captions at once: the ones at the playhead first, then the rest of the run. A change to placed polish places that polish again and replaces the previous set. After Done, nothing follows until Ignite runs again.

  6. Deliver

Batch-render the clips in Resolve with your render preset, or post them to connected social accounts where a platform is available (Pro and Max).

Resolve timelines and Ember projects

Ember works in two places, and it is worth knowing which one you are in.

A Resolve timeline

Use this for finishing. Ember reads the active timeline, can render its audio, places subtitles and polish back into Resolve, and renders the timeline's clips to a folder or a social account where a platform is available.

An Ember project

Use this when you want a self-contained edit: import footage, build timelines, caption, place graphics and review frames without Resolve. Ember projects and their local render need Pro or Max. Closing the project returns Ember to your Resolve session.

Export renders the timeline you are looking at: a Resolve timeline through Resolve's render presets, or an Ember project's own timeline with Ember Engine. Ember Engine, and the Ember projects that use it, come with Pro and Max.

The controls you will use most

Every action can be rebound in Settings > Keybinds. The defaults are chosen so the edit stays on the keyboard.

Space
Starts or stops playback in Ember. In a Resolve session it plays the audio preview.
I / O
Sets In and Out on Ember's own timeline, in an Ember project. In a Resolve session, set them on the Resolve timeline with Resolve's own I and O; Ember reads those marks.
Alt+X
Clears both marks, so the whole timeline is used again. Ember projects.
H
Splits the block at the playhead.
Return
Opens inline editing on the selected block, or the block under the mouse.
A
Adds an empty block at the playhead.
G
Deletes the selected blocks.
R
Detonates a block into word-level blocks.
S
Opens Switch Style for the selected blocks.
Left / Right
Moves the selected words to the previous or next block.
Ctrl+T
Moves the Resolve playhead to Ember's playhead.
Ctrl+Shift+T
Moves Ember's playhead to the Resolve playhead.
Ctrl+Shift+S
Runs the same pass as Start, from any page.
Shift+1
Opens the Projects screen (Pro or Max), where Ember Engine is downloaded at no extra cost on those plans.
Shift+2
Returns to the Main page.
D
Turns the selected timeline items off and on without moving them, in an Ember project.
